Futons are making a come back! (Natural Bed Company)
If you were a student in the 80s, having a futon was a sign of being hip and trendy – yes those were the words we used before ‘cool’ became cool. Futons were great, they combined the usefulness of a chair or sofa with a bed and added that touch of chic to the room with its minimalist design and bright coloured fabrics. The style originated in the East from Japan which gave an exotic overtone to the room and the sense that we were rather sophisticated. Just add joss sticks for the authentic feel!
Sofa beds took over from futons as the need for space became less of a criterion for choice and the need for it to act as a bed became less important. The comfort and look as a sofa and stylish piece of furniture became the over-riding concern.
But ‘times they are a’ changing’ again. As we see the property market slump, homes have to become ever more flexible. There may be many reasons why this flexibility is required. With ever more redundancies and job insecurity many people are opting for self employment or flexible working and need an office at home. But this has to double up as a guest room or room for an older child when they are home from uni or visiting step-children at weekends and holidays. Families may be outgrowing their home but unable to sell and move on so again rooms have to double up performing several functions.
The joy of a futon is that they can so quickly convert to a bed that is comfortable and attractive. You can co-ordinate with your existing colour scheme by using loose covers that are easy to wash or dye for a fresh look. The futon itself just sponges clean in minutes.
According to Peter Bennion of the Natural Bed Company “People are re-evaluating their existing homes and concerned about getting the most out of them. Everyone has a computer now and dual purpose study/spare bedrooms make total sense”. He reports a rise in futon sales compared to sofa beds and suggests it is because futons take up less space as they don’t have the bulky upholstered arms. Futons also have the benefit that when it is converted to a bed you don’t have to find somewhere to put the sofa cushions.
Futon mattresses are well made nowadays. They are filled with layers of cotton and polyester felt to give the best performance .The cotton layers create the essential ‘futon’ style, they contribute to firmness and the “cool in summer, warm in winter” character. The polyester layers are springier, lighter in weight and increase the futon’s comfort and life span. The firmness provides the ideal support for your back.

So what are the things to look for when you’re buying a futon? First spend as much as you can to get the best possible quality. There are many cheap ones about and although this won’t be a permanent bed, circumstances can change quite abruptly nowadays so if you have bought a good quality futon it can serve as a permanent bed should the need arise. Buy loose covers to protect the futon and co-ordinate with the rest of the room. To keep it in tip top condition roll it up every week to air the fibres and fluff them up.
